THE MOTHER, THE FATHER, THE ARTIST, AND THE LOVERCurated by Janine Maamari and Marie Tomb Part of Journeys Through Our Heritage
Beirut - Beirut Exhibition Center
The Mother, The Father, The Father, and The Lover is an installation that reflects the journey of Lebanese-American artist and critic Helen Khal, whose life embodied the societal struggles of being a woman, mother, wife, and artist.
The work explores the tensions between familial roles and personal identity, examining Khal’s experiences of separation, motherhood, and the pursuit of her art practice. Through portraits and monochromes—her favored subjects— the installation forms a visual triangle, where the “Other” remains an absence, evoking the silent voids and unspoken distances that have defined her personal and artistic journey.
